Lucy Wadham
Why Me? or Writing from Life with Lucy Wadham

Cost: 600 Euros

Dates: Sat 7 - Sat 14 September 2013

Language: English

Every life is a potential memoir. Faber novelist, Lucy Wadham, author of The Secret Life of France will help coax out the story from your life experience. Encouraging you to hone the skills that are required for good fiction – the use of conflict and tension, precise language and rich detail, pace and structure - Lucy will help you to shape your material and uncover its universal appeal.

During the week you'll be looking at examples of successful memoir and examining what it is that works about them. You'll be asking what to put into your memoir and what to leave out and what your life has taught you that you feel able to share with your reader.

You'll be given exercises to improve your storytelling skills and to help you to avoid the two main pitfalls of personal narrative: self-indulgence and self-regard. You'll also be exercising the two faculties that are most useful for winning over your reader: a sense of humour and a more than average capacity for truthfulness.

Your authority as a writer is your own personal experience, so you'll practice digging deep into the storehouse of your memories and bringing up the treasure. By the end of the week you'll have a basic plot for your memoir as well as the tools with which to build your confidence and avoid creative block as you go forth into your writer’s life.
